Road rules

6 rules every driver must know
01
Speed limits exist for a reason
Limits are set to match road conditions, not driver preference. Residential zones: 30–40 km/h. Highways: 100–120 km/h. Speeding doubles your stopping distance and triples crash severity.
Traffic Law
02
Seat belts — every seat, every trip
Wearing a seat belt cuts your risk of death in a crash by up to 60%. Every passenger — front and rear — must buckle up before the vehicle moves. There are no exceptions.
Mandatory
03
Drunk driving kills
The legal blood-alcohol limit in India is 0.03%. Alcohol slows reaction time, impairs judgement, and distorts depth perception — even at low levels. Do not drive if you have had even one drink.
Critical
04
Put the phone down
Using a handheld phone while driving multiplies crash risk by 4×. Texting, scrolling, or holding your phone is illegal. Use Bluetooth, or pull over safely before picking it up.
Critical
05
Signals and right of way
At unmarked intersections, give way to traffic from your right. Always yield to pedestrians at crossings, to emergency vehicles, and to traffic already in a roundabout. Indicate at least 3 seconds before turning.
Safe Practice
06
Respect traffic signals
Red means a complete stop behind the line. Amber means prepare to stop — not speed up. Green means proceed only when the path is clear. Running a red light is one of the top causes of fatal intersection crashes.

Safe habits that become second nature

Keep a 3-second gap

Pick a fixed point. When the car ahead passes it, count three seconds. Pass it before you finish counting? You are too close. Double the gap in rain.

Scan your mirrors every 5–8 seconds

Left, centre, right — in rotation. Conditions change fast. Knowing what is behind you is as important as what is ahead.

Signal before you move, not as you move

Indicators warn other drivers. Signal three seconds before a lane change or turn — not mid-manoeuvre.

Speed for conditions, not just limits

A speed limit is the maximum in ideal conditions. Rain, fog, heavy traffic, and night driving all demand lower speeds.

Never drive when tired

Fatigue impairs driving as severely as alcohol. If you are drifting or missing turns, pull over. A 20-minute nap beats caffeine.
